Wheat has been a healthy staple of the human diet for thousands of years. After all, it was packed with nutrients like protein, fiber, vitamins, antioxidants, and minerals. What more could you want? But when technology emerged in the late 19th century that gave companies more control over the parts of wheat grain, that all changed. Instead of healthy whole wheat grains, companies began producing refined flour — or white flour — at a lower cost. The only problem was that it removed the parts of the grain, like fiber, that made wheat so good for us in the first place!
That’s what we’re eating today. Refined flour is in so many of the foods you love, from pasta to cereal, making it difficult to avoid. And because these foods lack nutritious fiber, they can create blood sugar spikes that trigger insulin releases. Over time, eating too much of these things can build a resistance to insulin, which can lead to further complications.
So what do you do? First, try to eat foods that contain whole grains instead of refined flour. Make smart choices with what you eat! Second, supplement your diet with fiber. Soluble fiber can help your body maintain healthy blood sugar control. Plus, it increases feelings of satiety, making it easier to resist the foods you shouldn’t eat!
