Three Signs You Might be Lactose Intolerant

Do you love cheese, sour cream, and all things dairy? Maybe you consume a lot of milk products but you tend to feel bloated, gassy, or nauseous afterwards. You could potentially have an intolerance to lactose! Typically, lactose intolerance symptoms present themselves within two hours after consuming dairy. The most common symptoms are nausea, headaches, vomiting, diarrhea, flatulence, gurgling in the stomach, abdominal bloating, pain, and cramps. Sometimes it’s hard to pin point lactose intolerance and it may present itself in various ways. Here are a few signs you may be lactose intolerant.

Stomach Aches
Stomach pain and bloating is one of the most common symptoms of lactose intolerance. Your body produces an enzyme that breaks down lactose, but when you are lactose intolerant you don’t have the enzyme that breaks down the sugar in milk, leading to unpleasant symptoms after consumption of dairy products. The sugar ends up in your colon rather than being absorbed into your bloodstream. When it’s in the colon, it ferments and causes these symptoms.

Elimination Diets
If you’ve tried an elimination diet but haven’t seen any noticeable improvements, it may not have been a proper test. Lactose intolerance can be mild, moderate or serve. Sometimes cutting dairy out for a few days isn’t enough time to determine if this is the culprit or not. The Hydrogen breath test is a more accurate test and is done by a doctor. They’ll have you drink something with dairy in it, and test your breath afterwards. Since the lactose ferments in your gut, it produces high hydrogen levels, thus showing up in your breath. This can determine whether dairy is the problem without having to wait a few weeks to figure it out.

Migraines
If you suffer from frequent headaches or migraines, you could potentially be lactose intolerant. According to Dr. Jonathan Bernstein, an internist at the University of Cincinnati, migraines are often trigged by dairy products. Since these headaches can be brought on by food/drinks, this type of headache is called a dietary headache/migraine. The good news is, eliminating or consuming less of these products will greatly reduce and help to rid your body of this headache pain!
